Great article in that link you pasted above, thanks. Now, I manually backup my databases daily, and backup web pages whenever I make changes. It's a hassle, but it's just become part of my daily routine and only takes a few minutes.

How do you back up your sites now?
Do you use some kind of automated backup system? Or manual?

You were very lucky! (sort of)

These hackers weren't so bad. The loud ones seldom are. They just want to deface as many sites as they can and move on. They usually are not that good at cracking website security either.

The ones who you have to fear are the silent ones. The ones you don't even realise are there

Real nice...

Wouldn’t you think hackers could find a nice fat multinational to take a shot at rather than playing schoolyard bully with longcountdown.

I’m sure we can look forward to more of this in the future. As people become more tech-savvy, your local Beavis and Butthead are just as likely to be chuckling away ‘playing hacker’ as they are to be hanging out at the 7-Eleven.

… it seems only a few years ago that if you could use a computer it usually meant you had a brain.

Hi Jez. I don't know how they got in, but on my static sites they overwrote my index files. The good thing was they left the rest of the content intact so I just had to replace the index files by uploading the originals. I'm just glad they didn't delete all my files!

On a Wordpress blog, I ended up with two index files - the .html one they put in, and the .php one that Wordpress uses. You just need to delete the .html file for the .php file to be the default again.

Hi Nick,

Do you know how this was done?
What did you change to get your sites back up?
